Alpha Chi Omega adopted the “support of victims of domestic violence” as our national altruistic project. All members, both collegians and alumnae, provide service in their community to local shelters or organizations that aid survivors of domestic violence, and promote the awareness of the cause. The emphasis of this project is to offer members’ time and energy to women, children, and organizations in need.
Our chapter, Beta Eta, works closely with a local organization the Refuge House. Refuge House is a safe house, sheltering woman and children that have been victims of domestic violence. This establishment protects its members with a witness-protection-like program and helps them to start a new life without violence. They also provide counseling for the women and children that seek their help.
As a chapter we hold two annual week long events with a focus on DVA and philanthropy in the fall and spring semesters. In the fall the week’s events include a “Donuts for DVA” dessert night at the Alpha Chi Omega house, tabling at Market Wednesday in the FSU Student Union, and our annual DVA Gala in which parents, alumnae and students are all welcome to attend. Our spring events include “Pizza Pie with Alpha Chi”, which is a dinner held at our house, and “Seek the Heights with Alpha Chi”, which is our annual rock climbing competition. Seek the Heights is a huge hit in which fraternities, sororities, and other FSU organizations can participate. The event is also sponsored by many businesses in the community and has been recognized nationally as the first ever collegiate rock climbing competition. Our joint efforts raises nearly $10,000 for Refuge House. The chapter also donates to and participates in many Greek, campus wide, and Tallahassee community philanthropies throughout the year such as Dance Marathon at FSU and Relay for Life.
